Playing your Bigger Game – what does that even mean?
I recently told you about how I fell in love with a model for how to play big in work and life. So here’s a series of posts to help you get started, and possibly you will fall in love too.
What is the Bigger Game? How do you get on the board game and actually play?
In my Bold Action post, I talked about the great ideas we’ve had that lead to a great conversation. But then what? Without action, we just have an idea.
Yet some of us know what the Bold Action is, and we get stuck.
It’s going to take time.
It’s going to take money.
We don’t have the skills, knowledge, etc to know how to actually do it.
This is where Investment comes in.
What’s a good idea without investment? Nothing
To keep it simple, there are two areas of investment
1. Investing in the game
2. Investing in you as a player
When I started my bigger game of my career, I needed to invest in my coach training. I needed to learn coaching skills and I loved every minute of it. I dedicated over 200 hours of official study time on my courses because I really wanted to know what I was doing.
I also needed to learn how to run a business. So I went to tax workshops so I could learn how to do my VAT administration – in Dutch. So I also spent time learning Dutch (I could already chat but now I needed to understand complex tax regulation). I didn’t love this so much but I don’t get surprises from the tax office – which is a huge reward.
And for my business, I now need to take my Dutch to the next level. So I’ve found a tutor and I’m also investing in self-study time to learn how to speak Dutch at a professional level. The chat level isn’t enough anymore.
This will open up a whole new audience for the work I do. It will help me move my game forward.

This is the deposit box. Here, you consider, plan, and process the investments of time, money, talent, blood, sweat, and tears that you’ll need to make in order to create, run, and sustain your bigger game.
