This is part of my Thought Piece Series where I explore topics related to leadership and provide both answers and questions. My intention is to start meaningful conversations that help us move forward.
Recently I wrote about moving Beyond Insight, which is basically about applying the knowledge we have gained so that we can actually benefit from it.
And, I know that we have all done this:
Realise
“Oh yes, I need to actually apply my new knowledge to my life. Oh, that’s so true!”
And then
…
…
…
…
…
Oh look! that’s a cool course, webinar, book. That will help me with __________ (fill in with whatever challenge or opportunity you are currently procrastinating on).
We are human. Habits are hard to break. Gaining an insight gives us a dopamine hit. It’s addictive. And lord knows, so many things in our life are designed to give us dopamine hits (developers of the big apps study human psychology to understand how they can design the app so that we will stay on it longer).
Hence the reminder post.
We know that if we want to be able to pick up an actual heavy weight, we need to build up our physical muscles by training them regularly.
This happened to no one, ever:
“Ah, so if I train with weights daily I will get strong enough to lift that”
The next day: lifts the heavy weight.
We know that we won’t be able to get the results we want in a day.
The same is true for our minds: the cumulative effect of training daily over time leads to the results. Our insights and A-HA’s help us along the way, but unless we do something with them every day, nothing happens.
So, what do you need to be practicing daily?
And how can I help? Let me know.
